This question, though never directly asked is one of the most crucial in our business. With the amount of people who don’t take dietary supplements, it’s obvious many already think the answer is “we don’t need dietary supplements”. We’ve let this un-asked question go un-answered thinking we would overstate the obvious, but upon reflection have decided that it must be addressed.
The thing is there can be a lot of confusion around dietary supplements. Don’t we get all the nutrition we need from the foods that we eat? If we’re taking the recommended daily amounts of fruits and vegetables why would we need supplements? Do dietary supplements really do any good?
At the same time, we're hearing more and more about good fats versus bad fats, the benefits of higher amounts of fruits and vegetables in our diets and the poor health of people who mostly eat fast foods. What do we make of these examples of the nutrients we consume and their affects on the human body?
The fact is, in this age of fast food, high stress, pollution and a fast-paced life we push our bodies more than ever while failing to supply ourselves with the necessary nutrients that keep us healthy, active and feeling good.
Unlike any other time in history, we have one of the best and most diverse food supplies available and yet because of lifestyle or poor choice, a significant portion of us are failing to get sufficient amounts of the necessary nutrients we need.
For example, the average person in America eats just over one serving of vegetables per day and just under one serving of fruit. Nearly 25% of us eat no fruit or vegetables at all. For those of us who do get one serving of vegetables per day, that serving turns out to be more times than not…French fries. Research indicates that fewer than 9% of us actually consume the recommended 5 to 7 servings of fruit and vegetables each day that we should.
When looking at the data from nutritional surveys we find that more than half of the population does not take in the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of the most common of nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium and much less the literally thousands of micronutrients and plant-based phytonutrients found in the foods we should be eating. And the RDA was designed by the government as a guide to provide the absolute minimum requirements for healthy people. It does not take into consideration the changing chemistries of people aging past 35, people who are overweight or overstressed, nor in less than optimum health such as people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or those who smoke or drink. Add to that people in more "stressful" environments like polluted cities and the RDA seems woefully low.
In order to get the nutrients that we need, our best source is of course good quality food, particularly fruits and vegetables. But there are a lot of things that can prevent us from eating the way we know we should as well as things that detract from the quality of food even when we do.
There is a monumental amount of handling and processing that goes into getting food from the farm to your plate. Some foods can lose as much as a third of their vitamin C levels with the ordinary use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and nearly every food suffers losses secondary to transportation, storage, and excessive processing. So even if you are part of the 9% that actually eats 5 to 7 servings of fruit and vegetables per day, the actual nutritional content of the food itself may be compromised.
Dietary supplements (as the name suggests), is a way to fill in the gaps of your daily intake of nutrients. Taking dietary supplements is a way to make up for poor diet through lifestyle or quality of food as well as enhance the amount of nutrients beyond what you'd be able to do from just eating. Taking dietary supplements provides the amounts of macro and micro-nutrients, including phytonutrients, at a level that provides for cells, tissues, and organs allowing them to function at their highest possible level.
START WITH THE BASICS
Are you young and healthy and just want to get started on a regiment that may help to prevent future health issues? Are you in a high stress situation or job? Do you have a family history of chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or arthritis? For each of these there is a dietary supplement that can help your body combat these conditions, but if you're just getting into the idea of dietary supplements, we recommend four basic supplements that everyone, no matter the age or lifestyle, should take.
Antioxidants
A free radical is a molecule that has been damaged and because of that damage has greater potential to cause damage in other molecules. Oxygen free radicals are among the most dangerous of free radicals because they have the ability to cause damage to our cellular nuclear structures such as DNA. This kind of damage can lead to cellular mutation and cancer formation. Cholesterol in its non-oxidized state is harmless, but once exposed to oxygen free radicals it can change into a form that promotes hardening of the arteries. It is also very strongly believed that the accumulation of free radicals is behind the very process of aging itself and has been implicated in more than 50 diseases.
Antioxidant nutrients have the ability to prevent the damage caused by free radicals and in many cases can un-do damage that has already occurred. Because of this ability, antioxidants can alter and lower the risk of disease perhaps even slowing the aging process itself
Phytonutrients
Phytonutrient simply means a chemical manufactured by a plant that has a biologic role in human physiology. There are more than 8,000 known phytonutrients with more being discovered nearly every day. Phytonutrients include the common things we think of as nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and enzymes, but also include the thousands of nutrients that most of us have never heard of such as polyphenols, carotinoids, and plant sterols. Phytonutrients are involved in regulating and stimulating every life process that we have including but not limited to energy production, hormone regulation, as well as protection, support and regulation of genetic responses to environmental challenges.
Multivitamins
There are 13 vitamins that are divided into two groups – 9 vitamins are able to dissolve in water (8 B-vitamins plus vitamin C) and 4 vitamins that dissolve in fat (A, E, D, & K).
Life cannot exist without vitamins. They are absolutely essential for normal growth, repair, and development. Without vitamins we would be unable to properly process the foods that we eat. Each vitamin is involved in a multitude of different biological reactions and can play a variety of roles such as antioxidant (stops or reverses free radical damage), hormone (stimulates cellular function), catalyst (causes a chemical reaction to occur), substrate (a part of a molecule), and/or precursor (something from which a molecule can be made). Vitamins facilitate the chemical reactions that produce and repair such things as skin, bone and muscle. Even relatively minor deficiencies can reduce optimal function and can even cause permanent changes and/or damage to our health.
Multimineral
Minerals are also divided into two groups – macro (those needed in larger amounts) and micro (those needed only in very small amounts). There are 7 macro-minerals and more than 70 micro-minerals. Macro-minerals include Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium and Sulphur. Micro-minerals include, but are not limited to Boron, Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Germainium, Iodine, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Selenium, Silicone, Vanadium and Zinc.
We get our minerals either from the food we eat or the water we drink. Most minerals in food are chelated (bonded) with parts of the food itself. Minerals in water are ionic (held in electronic suspension). We can only absorb the ionic form of a mineral so chelated minerals are converted to the ionic form in our digestive system prior to absorption.
However, there are some factors that can prevent the uptake of minerals even when they may be available in our food. The absorptive surfaces of our digestive system need adequate fat soluble vitamins and a certain level of dietary cholesterol in order to appropriately process minerals. Some chelating agents are so strong that it is difficult for the body to over-come them. These include such things as phytic acid in grains, oxalic acid in green leafy vegetables and tannins from black tea.
